Clifford's Tower (EH)

A 13thC keep of York Castle. Built by Henry III to replace William the Conqueror's wooden tower. Roger de Clifford was executed and hung in chains in 1322. Prison in 19thC. Some remains of the curtain wall, gatehouse and towers of the castle bailey also survive behind the Castle Museum.
